Wildcats Uses 6-Run Second over Yellow Jackets, Post Third-Straight SIAC East Sweep

COLUMBIA, S.C. The Wildcats claimed their 'Baker's Dozen' win in a row on Sunday afternoon. Fort Valley State used a six-run second and posted its third-straight Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East series sweep with a 10-3 victory over Allen University.

After a scoreless first inning, Taylor Orr started the next at bat with a single, Avery Thomas reached on a fielder's choice and Jennifer Ramirez walked to load the bases. Laila Leverett singled home Orr, before Ashtyn Perkins doubled home two more. Chasity Kates ground out to score Leverett for a 4-0 score. After two outs, Leah Leonard singled home Kates, before she raced around on a Riley Youngblood double and 6-0 advantage. FVSU never let Allen back into the game.

With the victory, FVSU ran its winning streak to 13 games and completed its third SIAC East 3-game series sweep in a row and 4th in 5 series on the season. The Wildcats also posted its 25th win for the first time in 24 years since they were 25-9 for the 2000 season. The team's 25 wins are the most season victories since a 32-15 campaign in 2010.

Leonard led the visitors' hitters with a 3 for 4 day with a single and solo home run with two runs scored and two RBI. Ramirez added a double and single with a run and one RBI. Youngblood chipped in her run-scoring double and Perkins had her two-run two bagger. Leverett and Orr finished the hitting with a single apiece.

Orr won her second win in the three-game series. She went four innings without giving up a hit, but had one earned run after three walks.

Leading 6-1 in the top of the seventh, Leonard led off with a solo home run to left field. Riley Jenkins followed and reached on an error and she would score after two wild pitches and a passed ball to make it 8-1. Orr walked and Tiffany Rose, who pinch ran, came around to score on a Ramirez double. Ramirez finished the scoring on a wild pitch and 10-1 lead.

Allen plated two unearned runs in the home seventh for the 10-3 final.

FVSU will enjoy the success for over a week before it travels to face West Georgia for a twinbill on Tuesday, April 16, with games of 3:00 and 5:00 p.m.
