Wildcats Sweep Lady Bears, Split SIAC Crossover Friday

ALBANY, Ga. – The Wildcats had their first opportunity to bounce back and accomplished it. After falling to the top league team Spring Hill College, Fort Valley State swept past Miles, College, 3-0, and split its Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference first day matches.

FVSU (2-1/1-1 SIAC East) used three big runs to overtake Miles in the afternoon. Trailing 16-12, the Wildcats netted 13 of the final 15 points for a 25-18 first set. Tied at 11 in set number two, FVSU ran off seven-straight tallies and rode it to a 25-16 final. In the third set, FVSU rattled off an 11-2 spurt for a 22-8 lead on the way to an end of the match, 25-11.

In the morning match, Spring Hill took a two-set lead with scores of 25-13 and 25-13. The Wildcats were not done and held early leads of 8-4 and 11-7. Tied at 16, the Badgers outlasted the Wildcats in the end, 25-22.

Laila Hilton downed a team-high 12 kills in the win and 16 for the day. Benaye Kyle accounted for eight winners in both matches to tie the team-high of 16 in the six sets to go with 11 digs and two aces. Antonique Coleman added eight kills against Miles with a .500 hitting percentag and 10 kills for the day along with eight total blocks.

Dakotah Holmes contributed six kills in the opener and Nia Mack pounded five in 10 attacks for a .500 percent in the late contest. Caytlyn Sanford rounded out the front line with 10 total kills, three blocks and five digs.

Laiani McCullough was one of three setters and she totaled 34 assists with 11 digs and two aces. Jahyra Thomas recorded 17 assists and six digs, while Chaiza Jones dished five assists and dug 10 attacks in match two. Sarah Rosario had 16 digs with 13 against Spring Hill.

FVSU returns to action with its second pair of matches on Saturday (Sept. 21) when it faces Central State (9 a.m) and Kentucky State (2 p.m.).
