AUGUSTA, Ga. – Fort Valley State University Football (2-5, 2-3 SIAC) outlasted Savannah State University (3-4, 2-3 SIAC) in a defensive battle, claiming a 7-0 victory in the inaugural Good Trouble Heritage Classic on Saturday afternoon.
The Wildcats struck early and never looked back. FVSU's lone score came in the first quarter when
Donte Curry fielded a punt at the Wildcats' 24-yard line and sprinted 76 yards to the end zone.
Kyle Keese converted the extra point to give FVSU the decisive 7-0 lead.
Curry was electric in the return game, totaling 132 yards on eight punts, earning him the Good Trouble Heritage Classic Offensive MVP honor.
Quarterback
Don Hudson Jr. completed 9-of-15 passes for 81 yards, while
Alexander Wilson led the rushing attack with 30 yards on seven carries.
Chad Turner and
J.T. Pendleton paced the receiving corps, combining for six catches and 84 yards, Turner with 44 and Pendleton adding 40. In total, FVSU finished with 175 yards of offense.
The Wildcat defense stole the show, forcing 10 punts and tallying three sacks for a loss of 22 yards.
Jadyn Walker led all tacklers with nine stops, including seven solo efforts.
Dray Duncan added six tackles and three pass breakups, while
Omarion LaRoach and
Terrance Irons each recorded two tackles for loss. LaRoach also led the way with two sacks for nine yards lost. In the secondary,
Darnell Stephens made a major impact with three interceptions for 11 return yards, three pass breakups, and two tackles.
FVSU will look to keep the momentum going when they travel to Lane College on Saturday, Oct. 25. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. CT.
