SAVANNAH, Ga. – Fort Valley State University Women's Volleyball (16-4, 11-2 SIAC) fell in three sets to Savannah State University (14-5, 10-3 SIAC) on Thursday evening.
The Wildcats dropped the opening set 25-20. FVSU took an early lead before Savannah State gained control midway through the frame. The Wildcats made a late push, outscoring the Tigers 9-2 to cut the deficit to 18-16, but SSU closed out the set following an FVSU error.
In the second set, the Wildcats again started strong, taking the first point and holding a brief lead until the Tigers tied it at 4-4. FVSU's best stretch came at set point for Savannah State, when back-to-back kills from
Dakotah Holmes and an SSU miscue extended the frame. However, a Wildcat error ultimately sealed the 25-19 set win for the Tigers.
Savannah State jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the final set. FVSU responded with bursts of energy, including a four-point run with
Jalena Thompson serving to narrow the gap to 21-19. Despite the late rally, the Tigers closed the match on a kill to take the set 25-19 and the sweep.
Benaye Kyle led the Wildcats offensively with 14 kills, recording a double-double with 12 digs. Holmes followed with eight kills, while
Caytlyn Sanford and
Imani Stokes chipped in four apiece.
Morgan Hebert directed the offense with 33 assists.
Defensively,
Sarah Rosario anchored the back row with a team-high 23 digs. Holmes added 15, Kyle had 12, and Hebert completed the double-digit group with 10. At the net, Brooke Matthew stood tall with three solo blocks and one block assist.
The Wildcats return to action on Saturday, Oct. 25, when they travel to Paine College. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
