FORT VALLEY, Ga. – Fort Valley State University men's basketball (3-4, 2-4 SIAC) earned an 83-81 overtime home victory over Lane College (3-4, 3-3 SIAC) Wednesday evening.
Lane opened the contest with a two-point jumper before Derek Delgado Jr. answered with a field goal. Danny Delgado III then put the Wildcats in front for the first time with a three-pointer to make it 5-2. The Dragons briefly regained the lead at the free-throw line, but
Aidan Lambert sparked a run for FVSU with two free throws and a layup to give the Wildcats their largest lead of the early going.
Lane responded with a three-pointer to go back in front, 12-10.
Jahlen Jack tied the game at 14 and followed with a free throw and a triple to push Fort Valley State ahead, 17-14. Lane answered once again, building a five-point cushion at 22-17.
Tim James tied the game at 22-all, but the Dragons closed the half with their largest lead of the period. Jack connected on a banked three-pointer just before the buzzer to cut the deficit to 35-31 at halftime.
Lane opened the second half with a three to extend the lead back to seven.
Sincere Whitehead tied the game at 46 with a layup and an ensuing and-one free throw. The teams traded the lead throughout the half until Fort Valley State pulled ahead by six, 60-54, its largest advantage of the second half.
Lane tied the game at 70 with just over three minutes remaining. The Dragons took a one-point lead at the free-throw line with 32 seconds left, but
C.J. Williams drained a clutch three-pointer with nine seconds remaining to put the Wildcats back in front, 73-71. Lane scored on a layup as time expired, sending the game into overtime tied at 73.
Lane opened overtime with two free throws, but the Wildcats responded. Lambert tied the game at 79 with a layup and an and-one free throw after Lane briefly pulled ahead. The Dragons regained the lead at the line, but Danny Delgado III answered with a layup to tie the game at 81. Derek Delgado Jr. sealed the win with a steal and layup in the final moments, securing the 83-81 victory.
Lambert led the Wildcats with a double-double, posting 25 points and 12 rebounds. Delgado III also recorded a double-double with 15 points and a team-high 10 assists. Williams rounded out the double-figure scorers with 12 points, shooting 4-for-5 from three-point range.
Whitehead finished with nine rebounds, while Delgado III added seven.
Fort Valley State returns to action Friday, Dec. 19, hosting LeMoyne-Owen College at 7:30 p.m.
