FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats accomplished a "once in a decade" feat on Monday night. For the first time since the 2014-15 season, Fort Valley State completed the men's basketball sweep of Morehouse College as Sayerr Senghore sank the game-winning free throws with one second left for the home victory.
With the opening two buckets of the second half by Hassane Diallo, FVSU extended its lead to a game-high 17 points, 58-31. Morehouse College used a 9-0 spurt six minutes into the second 20 minutes and a seven-point surge with under four minutes to pull within a basket, 61-59, at 1:52. The visitors made two free throws to deadlock the game, 64-64, with 14 ticks. Off an offensive rebound, Senghore was fouled with a second to go and toed the line for the winning foul shots.
After the victory, FVSU (9-14/8-8 SIAC East) recorded its first season sweep of Morehouse (13-11/10-6 SIAC East) in a decade. In fact, Monday night's Wildcat win was the first one over the Maroon Tigers in FVSU's HPE Arena since Feb. 2 of 2015 by a 60-58 final. FVSU claimed the first meeting in Atlanta on Jan. 25 by a single point, 58-57. The last time FVSU won both games it was part of a 4-game win streak over Morehouse spanning over the 2013-14 and 2014-15 campaigns.
FVSU received two-thirds of its offense off its bench from three players – Antonio Pelham, Jaylen Jackson and Tyler Pendergrass -- with 41 of its 66 total points. Pelham has loved to face Morehouse this season as he has scored 37 of his 76 points of the season in the two games. The forward pumped in a career-high 25 points, 22 in the first half with six treys, on 9 of 15 field goals and 7 of 13 from 3-point range.
Jackson contributed 11 points to go with four assists, three rebounds, a blocked shot and a steal. Pendergrass rounded out the subs with five points, including a triple.
Diallo paced the Wildcat starters with 12 points and hauled in six rebounds. Senghore chipped in eight points, no more important than the final two from the foul line, and 11 rebounds.
Jahlen Jack dished out seven assists to go with two points and Marcus Scott had an important layup with 3:38 left. Khirus Doucet added seven assists, four boards, a foul shot and one steal.
Cedric Taylor III guided Morehouse to a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds.
The Maroon Tigers went out to a 7-point lead twice, 13-6 and 15-8, in the first five minutes. The visitors led 17-12, before Pelham took over the first stanza. Pelham pumped in 18 of the Wildcats ensuing 20 points and single-handedly shoved the home team to the lead.
Trailing 19-17, Pelham drained four-straight 3-pointers and gave FVSU a 29-22 advantage. After a layup, he added a sixth triple for a double-digit lead, 34-24. Pendergrass hit his own trey with 43 seconds in the first half for the 44-31 intermission total.
FVSU has four days off before it returns to action at home on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 15, against Allen University. Tip is set for 3 p.m.
