FVSU Sweeps Tornadoes on Diamond

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats put together a pair of good games Tuesday afternoon. Fort Valley State scored five times in each of the first three innings and swept past Talladega College, 5-1 and 8-2, on the softball diamond.

Alexia Scott lofted a first-frame sac fly and added an RBI triple in the third for a 5-0 FVSU lead in the opener. Tenison Myricks and Taylor Watson didn't need any more run support as the two pitchers gave up nine hits but only one earned run and struck out nine in the seven innings in the circle.

The Wildcats (4-8) jumped on the Tornadoes in the late game. Jasmin Stewart singled home both Collage Newton and Leah Leonard to start a five-run first. Taylor Orr and Hailey Bracey chipped in run-scoring singles and Myricks an RBI triple for the other three tallies. FVSU outscored Talladega, 3-2, over the final five innings for the win.

Of the home team's 17 hits, Stewart accounted for five of them in seven at bats with three runs, three RBI and three stolen bases. Skakel chipped in two singles and a triple with two runs and one RBI.

Orr added two singles in four at bats with one RBI and Tenison was 2 for 3 with two runs and the run-scoring triple in the late contest.

In the second game, Gabrielle Stonecypher produced her best outing where she gave up eight hits with only one earned run and struck out six.

FVSU will have almost a week off before it returns to the second SIAC series when it hosts Allen University on Monday and Tuesday, March 3-4. Monday will be a doubleheader at 1 and 3 p.m.
