Wildcats split regular season ending doubleheader

FORT VALLEY, Ga.- Fort Valley State University softball (21-20) took a 3-0 loss and a 7-0 win in a doubleheader with Trinity Baptist College (7-30) to end the regular season Monday afternoon. 

The first contest was all Eagles with the 3-0 win for the visitors. TBC plated two runs in the third inning on an infield single. They scored again in the fifth on a single followed by a Wildcat miscue. 

Laila Leverett led the offense with a 2-for-3 outing with a pair of singles. 

Taylor Watson got the start and the loss in the circle for FVSU. She tossed a complete seven inning contest with three runs, two of which were earned, on six hits with five strikeout victims. 

The second game was a complete turn around and was all Wildcats through seven innings. Leah Leonard put Fort Valley on the board early with an RBI double down the left field line. Two more runs scored in the second inning. Taylor Orr made it 2-0 with an RBI single to left field. Zoe Molina drove in run number three with a double blasted down the left field line. Orr struck again in the third inning making it a 4-0 ball game with a run scoring single up the middle. FVSU pushed three more around in the fourth inning to cap off the scoring. Jennifer Ramirez dropped down a sacrifice bunt to push the runners over and force an Eagles error to score a run. Leonard and Ramirez put on a double steal to draw a throw from the TBC catcher which allowed Leonard to score. The seventh run came around on a Tenison Myricks triple to center field to solidify the 7-0 win. 

Zayla Skakel led the offense with a 2-for-2 outing. Myricks and Orr both went 2-for-3 in game two. Leonard, Myricks and Molina all had doubles while Scott and Myricks nabbed triples. 

Myricks got the start and the win in the circle tossing the first five innings allowing no runs on five hits with six strikeouts. Gabrielle Stonecypher got the save throwing the last two innings with zero runs scoring on zero hits and two strikeouts. 

The Wildcats will be back in action for the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Championships in Columbus, Ga. The bracket has not been released yet. Stay tuned to FVSUSports.com for schedule updates.
