FORT VALLEY, Ga.- The Fort Valley State University Women's Volleyball team (2-0) delivered a dominant performance on Thursday night, sweeping Paine College (0-3) in straight sets (25-11, 25-10, 25-22).
The Wildcats came out firing in set one, opening the match with eight straight points behind the steady serving of
Sarah Rosario to jump out to an 8-0 lead. After the Lions broke through with a pair of points, FVSU responded with back-to-back four-point runs at the ninth and 13th points. The set finished with a kill from
Benaye Kyle and a Paine setting error to secure the 25-11 win.
Set two saw Paine take a quick 5-1 advantage, but the Wildcats quickly flipped the script with a six-point run led by
Zoe Lowe from the service line. After a Paine point,
Morgan Hebert kept the pressure on with a 13-point stretch, helping Fort Valley State University extend its lead to 20-6. A service ace from
Jalena Thompson capped the frame as the Wildcats cruised to a 25-10 win.
The Lions showed their best fight in the third set, battling back-and-forth with the Wildcats holding an 18-22 lead late. But Fort Valley closed in dramatic fashion, rattling off eight straight points to claim the match, punctuated by an
Aryona Johnston kill for the 25-22 victory.
Johnston led the FVSU offense with six kills while hitting .500, followed closely by
Brooke Matthews with five kills on a blistering .833 clip. Reagann Mann directed the offense with 11 assists, while
Sa'Nyah Daly added five. Hebert powered the service line with four aces and Rosario added three.
Defensively, Rosario anchored the back row with 11 digs and Lowe added six. At the net, Matthews was a force with two solo blocks and a block assist, while
Antonia Brewer led with three block assists and
Tanyla Farley contributed two.
The Wildcats return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 17 when they host Claflin University at 6 p.m.
