FVSU Extends Win Streak to Five in 60-54 Win Over Benedict

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – Fort Valley State University Men's Basketball (6-4, 5-4 SIAC) defeated Benedict College (4-6, 4-6 SIAC) 60-54 Monday evening to extend its win streak to five games.

Benedict scored the first four points of the contest to take an early 4-0 lead. Danny Delgardo III trimmed the deficit to one with a three-pointer before giving the Wildcats their first lead of the game, 8-7, on another long-range basket. The Tigers briefly reclaimed the lead on a tip-in layup, but Meka Nnaji tied the game at nine with a made free throw. Benedict regained the advantage at 11-9 and carried a five-point lead into halftime, 22-17.

Aidan Lambert opened the second half with a layup to cut the deficit to three, 22-19. The teams traded baskets early in the period before Prince Davies put FVSU back in front for the first time since the opening half with just under 14:30 remaining. The Wildcats maintained the lead until the Tigers connected on a three-pointer around the 10-minute mark to briefly regain the advantage. Lambert responded to give Fort Valley State a 43-41 lead, one the Wildcats would not relinquish, securing the 60-54 victory.

Three Wildcats finished in double figures. Delgardo III led all scorers with 25 points on seven field goals, including five from beyond the arc, while going 7-for-10 from the free-throw line. Davies followed with 13 points, shooting 2-for-3 from the floor and 9-for-10 at the charity stripe. Lambert added 11 points on four made field goals.

Davies led the Wildcats on the glass with seven rebounds, while Delgardo III added six. Sincere Whitehead anchored the defensive effort, recording all six of Fort Valley State's blocked shots.
