FORT VALLEY, Ga. – Fort Valley State University Softball (0-2) dropped both games of a Saturday doubleheader to Truett McConnell University (4-0).
In game one, the Bears pulled away for a 10-1 victory. Truett McConnell scored first with a three-run second inning on an FVSU error, a fielder's choice, and a single, then added two more on a two-RBI double in the top of the inning. The Bears extended their lead with two runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth. The Wildcats' lone run came in the bottom of the fifth as
Marley Quammie singled and scored on a groundout by
Darianna Sosa.
Four different Wildcats recorded hits in game one, highlighted by Jasmine Stewart's triple.
Megan Blanks and Quammie each stole a base.
Gabrielle Stonecypher started in the circle, allowing six hits and seven runs, only two earned, over three innings.
Danielle Bacon pitched two innings of relief, surrendering three runs on three hits.
The Wildcats fell 9-4 in game two. Truett McConnell struck first with a steal of home in the top of the first, but FVSU answered immediately. Stewart singled in a run, and Quammie later drove in another to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead. The Bears reclaimed the lead in the third on a two-run homer and added runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, including a second homer, pushing the score to 9-2. FVSU scored twice in the seventh on a passed ball and Stewart RBI groundout to close the scoring at 9-4.
Freshman
Amira Johnson led FVSU with a 2-for-3 performance. Stewart went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while
Mariah Williams, Sosa, and
Jennifer Ramirez each recorded a stolen base.
Taylor Watson started in the circle, pitching 3.2 innings with four runs allowed, two earned, and two strikeouts.
Amiyah Morrison made her debut, tossing 1.1 innings with three runs, one earned, while Stonecypher finished with two innings, giving up two runs, one earned.
The Wildcats return to action Friday, February 13, at the HBCU Invitational, facing Claflin University at 10 a.m. and Alabama A&M University at 2:30 p.m.
