FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. — The Fort Valley State University women's volleyball team spent the weekend competing against a challenging field at the Lion's Den Invitational, taking on Emmanuel University, the University of Mount Olive and Mars Hill University.
The Wildcats faced three opponents over two days, giving the team an early-season opportunity to compete, build chemistry and discover the individual strengths that will help shape the season ahead.
Although Fort Valley State came up short in each matchup, the weekend was highlighted by competitive individual performances, contributions from throughout the roster and a continued willingness to battle from the opening serve to the final point.
Wildcats Open Against Emmanuel
Fort Valley State began the tournament Friday morning against Emmanuel University, the host of the Lion's Den Invitational. The Wildcats battled the Lions in their opening match before turning their attention toward their second match of the day. The tournament schedule placed Emmanuel and Fort Valley State on the court at 11:30 a.m. Friday.
Shamora Scott led the Wildcats' attack against Emmanuel with five kills, establishing herself as one of Fort Valley State's primary offensive threats. Scott also recorded two blocks, giving the Wildcats production on both sides of the net.
Caytlyn Sanford followed with four kills and delivered one of the weekend's most complete performances, finishing the Emmanuel matchup with a team-high 10 digs.
Dakotah Holmes contributed three kills, seven digs and two assists, continuing to demonstrate her ability to affect the match both offensively and defensively.
Behind the attack, Reagan Mann directed the offense with a team-high 16 assists while adding six digs.
The Wildcats also received important contributions at the net and from the service line. Jalayah Hamby recorded two blocks, while Micah Robinson added a block and an ace. Lataya Mitchell also recorded an ace.
Emmanuel Standouts
The opening match immediately showed the variety within Fort Valley State's roster, with attackers, setters and defensive players each playing a role.
Second Match Brings Strong Offensive Effort Against Mount Olive
Later Friday afternoon, the Wildcats returned to the court for their second match of the day, facing Mount Olive at 4:30 p.m.
The Wildcats continued to find production from multiple players, led by another strong performance from Scott.
Scott turned in one of her best offensive performances of the weekend, recording a team-high eight kills on 17 attacks while hitting .294. She also contributed one solo block and two block assists, finishing with a team-high 10 points.
Tanyla Farley provided another major offensive spark, recording seven kills on 19 attacks while hitting .211. Farley also recorded a solo block and finished with eight points.
Dakotah Holmes added six kills, two assists and five digs, giving Fort Valley State another two-way contributor.
The Wildcats' offense was orchestrated by Reagan Mann, who recorded an impressive 24 assists while also collecting 11 digs. Her ability to distribute the ball while contributing defensively made her one of the most active Wildcats on the court.
Caytlyn Sanford added four kills, while Mashayla Collins recorded three kills and an ace. Morgan Ansley contributed two kills, while Brooke Matthews added a kill and two service aces.
The Wildcats also received service production from Micah Robinson, who recorded two aces, while the defensive effort featured contributions from Naoma Yancey, Lataya Mitchell, Holmes, Collins, Matthews and Robinson.

The performance against Mount Olive was particularly encouraging from an offensive standpoint, as Fort Valley State received substantial production from Scott, Farley and Holmes while Mann continued to establish the offense from the setter position.
Wildcats Close Weekend Against Mars Hill
Fort Valley State returned to action Saturday morning against Mars Hill University, with the tournament's final match scheduled for 10 a.m.
Mars Hill ultimately claimed the match in three sets, 25-10, 25-19 and 25-14.
Despite the result, the Wildcats again saw several student-athletes make meaningful contributions.
Caytlyn Sanford led Fort Valley State with five kills on 11 attacks while hitting .455, giving her one of the most efficient offensive performances of the weekend.
Dakotah Holmes and Tanyla Farley each recorded six kills, providing Fort Valley State with two additional offensive leaders. Farley finished with a .174 attacking percentage, while Holmes hit .158.
Brooke Matthews added two kills, while Morgan Ansley recorded a kill and hit .333. Reagan Mann contributed a kill and continued to handle offensive responsibilities for the Wildcats.
The defensive effort featured contributions from throughout the roster. Naoma Yancey handled libero responsibilities, while Lataya Mitchell also saw action in the libero role.
Mashayla Collins also remained active in the rotation, while Jalayah Hamby, Kenley Covington, Micah Robinson, Shamora Scott and others contributed during the three-set contest.
A Weekend Defined by Teamwork
While the final results did not fall in the Wildcats' favor, the Lion's Den Invitational provided a valuable early-season test against three different opponents and gave Fort Valley State opportunities to evaluate its strengths across the roster.
The weekend belonged to more than just the players who led the statistical categories.
Scott established herself as a consistent offensive and blocking threat. Farley provided another powerful option at the net. Sanford demonstrated her ability to contribute offensively while anchoring the defense. Holmes repeatedly impacted both sides of the court.
Behind them, Mann provided stability and direction as the primary setter, while Collins, Matthews, Robinson, Mitchell and Yancey each contributed through attacking, serving or defensive responsibilities.
Hamby, Ansley, Covington and Jose also saw action throughout the weekend, giving Fort Valley State opportunities to develop depth and continue building chemistry.
That variety is one of the most encouraging takeaways from the tournament.
Looking Forward
The Lion's Den Invitational represented an early test for Fort Valley State women's volleyball, with the Wildcats facing Emmanuel, Mount Olive and Mars Hill over a demanding two-day stretch. The official schedule lists the Wildcats' next tournament appearance at the Black Excellence Classic in Albany, Georgia, beginning September 4.
For Fort Valley State, the next step is taking the lessons learned from Franklin Springs and turning them into progress.
The Wildcats showed that they have multiple players capable of making an impact, whether attacking from the front row, setting the offense, serving with pressure or making defensive plays in the back row.
The scoreboard may not have reflected the effort the Wildcats put forward throughout the weekend, but the individual performances provided plenty of reasons for optimism.
The season is young. The Wildcats are building. And Wildcat Volleyball is just getting started.
