Montez Robinson

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – Coming to The Valley on January 5, Fort Valley State’s Montez Robinson abruptly made his new team one no opponent wanted to face.

Taking over a 1-9 team, the new Wildcats Head Coach guided the program to a 6-10 second semester run. Robinson, in fact, kept the newfound tough FVSU team to its first Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament win in four years in a 73-53 going away victory over Kentucky State. In fact, FVSU fell 10 seconds short of pulling an upset of eventual NCAA Division II South Region qualifier and SIAC West Champion Miles College. The Bears hit a 3-pointer to send the contest to overtime before it scored the win and ended the upset Wildcats tournament run.

A full Wildcats offseason of preparation now in the books, Robinson and his men’s basketball staff aims to be a troubling elixir for the upcoming 2022-23 campaign. A FVSU spring semester dotted with upsets of SIAC East champion Benedict College and SIAC West runner-up Tuskegee along with five losses by six points or less.

Heading into his first full season, the veteran coach brings a tough mentality and get-it-done attitude directing the Wildcats. With SIAC Freshman of the Year, K.J. Doucet, and the rest of the Wildcats solid foundation and a quality group of newcomers dotting the roster, Robinson’s first FVSU team is set to make some noise in the SIAC and South Region ranks.

When he received the call to come to The Valley, Robinson was serving as a national scout for HBCU All Stars. He previously was a head coach in the NCAA Division I ranks for six seasons at Alcorn State (2015-20), where he stands fifth in all-time school wins at 89, and as interim head coach at the University of Tennessee at Martin (2020-21) during the CoVID season.

The Birmingham/Fairfield, Ala., native love to teach the game of basketball he coaches and aims to have his Wildcats compete for a championship each-and-every year.

Robinson is a graduate of the University of North Georgia where he played both basketball and baseball. He also holds a graduate degree from Bethune-Cookman University.
