Spencer Wright

Entering his first full season after joining the staff in the spring of 2022, Spencer Wright brings a veteran presence and passion for the game to the Wildcats men’s basketball coaching staff.

With over two decades of coaching experience, Wright assists Fort Valley State head coach Montez Robinson in all aspects of guiding the program, including game prep, recruiting and in-game assistance.

After a short time away from the collegiate scene, Wright came to The Valley last spring and helped the Wildcats to a 7-11 mark in the second semester of the 2021-22 season.

During his 20-plus year coaching career, Wright has helped 18 former players go on the play professionally, seen over 95% of the seniors graduate, aided 13 All-Conference players (1 Player of the Year, 3 Defensive Players of the Year and a Freshman of the Year). The teams he has helped direct recorded two regular season conference championships, three conference championship games and four consecutive years in the post-season tournaments (CIT, NIT, NCAA and CBI).
The veteran men’s basketball coach spent his last 10 years in the NCAA Division I ranks where he was an assistant coach at Florida International University from 2015-18 and associate head coach for Mercer University from 2008-15.

Wright also started out in DI with seven seasons as an assistant on the University of Texas-Pan American bench (1999-2006).

He directed the Potlatch High School boys’ basketball team for the 2006-07 campaign, before he was an assistant coach with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers (2007-08) of the NBA G-League.
