FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats newest team has added its first coaching piece to the program. Fort Valley State announces the hiring of the new assistant men's volleyball coach Edward Wrather to the upcoming 2021 program.

Wrather will team up with a FVSU head coach to be named in the coming weeks to direct the inaugural 2021 Wildcats men's volleyball team.

"I am coming to Fort Valley State to assist in the building of a powerhouse in the sport of men's volleyball, while advancing the game I love," said Wrather.

Coach Wrather has been around the game of volleyball since 1985. For 35 years, the new FVSU coach has been passionate about volleyball and continues to dedicate himself to the development of scholar-athletes and increase their ability to achieve excellence in both academics and athletics.

"I believes volleyball is more than just a game. Through the sport, I am able to teach universal skill sets of teamwork, work ethic, commitment, leadership, time management, mental agility, emotional and physical health, responsibility, and personal determination," explained Wrather.

Coach Wrather has trained athletes from middle school to the professional level.  For eight years, he coached girls' and boys' middle school level volleyball, and at the high school level where he trained girls and boys from economically-challenged communities for 20 years. Wrather served as the head coach for 18 of those 20 years and founded the first boys' volleyball program in the school's history.

In his offseason, coach Wrather assisted his former players, who were either trying become professional players or who were already professionals by working on their techniques, developing a new skill or adding to their host of skills. The new Wildcats assistant has seven years of experience as a USA High Performance pipeline court coach, who help to select our country's next Olympic stars.

In addition, coach Wrather has coached clubs within the AAU and USAV regions for 20 years. He is not only an experienced coach, but also a player.  He played for both the All-Army Volleyball team and the Sandhaussen Germany FRG Travel team for two seasons.

Wrather is a 20-year member of the IHSA, a four-year member of the AVCA along with a part of First Point Volleyball the past three three years and founder of the Wrather Youth Organization, LLC since 2011.
