Wildcats Split with Tigers

By: FVSU Office of Sports Information

In basketball action last night (December 7) from the HPE Arena, Fort Valley State University (FVSU) hosted Stillman College in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) match up.  In the first meeting of the season between the programs, the Lady Wildcats of FVSU defeated the Lady Tigers 71-65 while the Wildcats lost to the Tigers 68-52.

In women's action, the Lady Wildcats got their best scoring performance of the season from junior forward Kendra Evans.  The Greensboro, Ga. native scored a game-high 23 points, chipped in six steals, five rebounds, three assists, and one blocked shot.

Back-to-back conference player of the week Jasmine Birdsong also had a solid game.  The Sparta, Ga. native was eight out of 14 from the floor and finished with 19 points.  She also collected six rebounds and had one blocked shot.

As a team, the Lady Wildcats shot 43.6% from the field and went three of eight from three point range.  They made 20 out of 31 free throw opportunities.

The win was the third consecutive for FVSU.  Now 5-3 overall, the Lady Wildcats remain undefeated in SIAC play with a 3-0 mark.

For the men, the story was not as pleasing for the Wildcats who suffered their first conference loss of the year.  After a sluggish start, the Wildcats simply were not able to overcome a Tiger team which shot a respectable 45% from the floor while FVSU made only 29% of its shots.

Trailing 37-22 at halftime, the Wildcats managed only seven baskets in the game's first 20 minutes and hit 12 baskets in the second half.   Forward Brandon Davey led the Wildcats in scoring with 15 points.  He also collected 11 rebounds.

Despite missing most of the second half with a shoulder injury, point guard Martavius Orr notched double figure scoring for the Wildcats with 12 points.  The Tigers got 19 points from Rakee Anderson; 16 from Kevin Johnson; 13 from LaJay Sears; and 12 from Lee Riley.

The loss drops the Wildcats to an overall record of 2-5 and to 2-1 in the SIAC.

FVSU Basketball returns to the hardwood on Saturday (December 11) when they travel to Orangeburg, SC to meet the Panthers of Claflin University.  The Lady Wildcats will play at 1:30 p.m. followed by the men.
