COLUMBUS, GA - Tuesday, November 1 - The Albany State Golden Rams and the Fort Valley State Wildcats are gearing up to clash in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) game where “Bragging Rights” and “Pride” are at stake. The event is the 22nd Annual Fountain City Classic (FCC), in Columbus (Georgia) at the A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium, Victory Drive and Veterans Parkway, Saturday, November 5, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. The game is expected to attract a sellout crowd of 15,000 fans to witness what is considered one of the biggest, bitterest and oldest football rivalries in black college football. Another 28,000 fans will be gathering for the FCC tailgating parties, the FCC is one of the largest events held at South Commons during the year.
The game will be broadcast live via radio. Columbus based radio station WOKS 1340-AM is providing live radio broadcast as well as radio stations WJIZ 98.1 FM in Albany & WFVS 104.3 FM in Fort Valley.
This year's contest is the 22nd of what has become an annual major sporting and entertainment event for the City of Columbus with well over 40,000 fans gathered at South Commons. While the fierce rivalry between the two team's spans more than half a century, beginning in 1945; coordinators moved the game to Columbus in 1990, a regional center, to attract more corporate support, recruit more students and make it a week full of classic activities. The overall series is 32-29-3 favoring FVSU and the FCC overall series is 16-5-0 favoring ASU. ASU has won seven of the last eight outings between the two rivalries. ASU won last year. For the 2011 season, ASU record is 7-2 overall & 5-1 SIAC Conf & FVSU is 2-7 overall & 2-4 in SIAC Conf play. ASU is co-leader of the East Division with Morehouse College. FVSU could possibly be the “spoiler” if they were to defeat the ASU Golden Rams.
State Representative Calvin Smyre, Chairman of the Fountain City Classic, Inc. commented, "It makes great business sense to bring this gathering and game to Columbus; there are a lot of alumni located in and around Columbus and they are loyal football fans. With the proceeds going to the schools, more funds can be generated from corporate sponsors and a larger crowd in attendance at a larger facility. It's a win-win situation for the city of Columbus and both Universities. Hotels and restaurants are full and people are having a great weekend."
