In the season opener for the Wildcats of Fort Valley State University, all they had to do was travel south of the campus to Americus, Georgia, meet the undefeated and 21st ranked Hurricanes of Georgia Southwestern University, and secure their first win of the season. While the Wildcats did all they could to knock the Hurricanes off track, GSW weathered the FVSU attack with a 68-58 win in the Storm Dome.
Despite the loss, the forecast appears to be bright for the Wildcats. The impressive performance against the Hurricanes was led by newcomer Cory Hunter. The sophomore forward finished with 14 points and three rebounds. In his debut Hunter converted six of seven field goal attempts.
Seasoned veteran Detrius McCall also tried to block the path of the Hurricanes. The senior center recorded 11 points; had three rebounds, one steal, and two blocked shots
Overall, FVSU shot 41.8% from the floor with 23 baskets on 55 attempts. The Wildcats made six of 23 three point shots and six of 11 free throws.
“Generally, I was impressed with our performance in our first game, said FVSU Head Coach Sammy Jackson. We were still doing some tinkering during the game just to see how the guys react to certain sets on the floor. While we still have a lot of work ahead of us, our performance against this ranked team lets us know that we're on the right track.”
