When the Wildcats of Fort Valley State University (FVSU) took their two-game win streak into a match up with the Tigers of Benedict College on January 14th, they were well aware that expanding the win streak to three games would mean defeating the number one ranked team in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). And while the Wildcats won the first half of the game, the second half and the win went to the Tigers of Benedict College, 72-62.
In the first half, the Wildcats had to contend with a Tiger team that shot extremely well from the floor in the early minutes of the game. Trailing by as many as seven points, FVSU rallied to take a 41-35 lead into the halftime.
Outscored 37-21 in the second half, the Wildcats were unable to maintain the halftime lead. The primary reason the lead was lost was poor field goal shooting in the final 20 minutes. Converting only eight of 32 shots in the second half, the offensive performance of the Wildcats was overshadowed by the 11 of 24 shooting effort of the Tigers in the last half.
For the game, Senior center
Cecil Bent led the Wildcats with 21 points and five rebounds. Forward
Brandon Davey finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 5-7 overall and to 5-5 in conference play. They return to action on January 17
th against the Thorobreds of Kentucky State University. The teams tip it off at 7:30 p.m. in the Exum Center at Kentucky State University.
