Wildcats come close but fall to the Panthers

By: FVSU Office of Sports Information

The January 28th basketball contest between Fort Valley State University (FVSU) and Clark Atlanta University (CAU) pitted the fourth ranked Panthers against the sixth ranked Wildcats. The fact that both teams are in the thick of the chase for the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) regular season title made the match-up even more important. In a game that was close throughout, the Panthers managed a 73-69 win.

After the first half of play, the Wildcats held a 32-31 lead at the intermission. FVSU made 13 of 38 field goal attempts in the game's first 20 minutes while the Panthers converted 10 of 27 shots. In the second half, both teams converted 13 field goals. The difference in the game score was the fact that CAU made 15 second half free throws compared to the 10 made by the Wildcats. For the game, FVSU shot just 50% from the free throw line, 13 of 26. The Panthers shot at a 70% clip from the charity stripe.

Reservist Nigel Domineck led the Wildcats in scoring with a game-high 20 points. Brandon Davey finished with 12 points and Corey Hunter added 10.

Now at 8-9 overall and 8-7 in conference play, the Wildcats are back in action on January 31st at 8 p.m. when they host the Maroon Tigers of Morehouse College in the HPE Complex.
