FVSU Athletics to host “FVSU NFL Legends of Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow Gala”

On Saturday, August 18, 2012 at 6 p.m., the Fort Valley State University (FVSU) Department of Athletics will host the “FVSU NFL Legends of Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow Gala.” The black tie optional event will be held in the HPE Complex and will honor 12 FVSU legends that played in the National Football League. The list of honorees features NFL Hall of Famer Rayfield Wright, Pittsburgh Steelers great Greg Lloyd, Sr., and defensive standouts Nicholas Harper (Indianapolis Colts) and Tyrone Poole (Tennessee Titans).
In addition to honoring the player legends, the gala will also feature tributes to FVSU coaching legends Leon Lomax and Douglas Porter. The night will also be highlighted by the recognition of FVSU players who were signed by NFL teams during the 2011 NFL Draft and Free Agent period. The evening will also include a special recognition of FVSU alumnus Wilson Gosier, a former NFL/WFL game official.
The “FVSU NFL Legends of Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow Gala” is one of the primary fundraising campaigns of the athletics department for the 2012 season. “We are so thankful that our legends have decided to lend their celebrity status to this fundraising event, said Willie Williams, FVSU Vice President of Student Affairs and Interim Director of Athletics. In a time when funds are so desperately needed to effectively operate our athletics program, these football greats have risen to the challenge and shown their love and commitment to the university by giving of their time. Our greatest hope now is that other alumni, the local business community and friends of Fort Valley State University will attend the event and show their support.”
The event is open to the public. Tickets for the gala are $100 per person with all proceeds benefitting the athletics department. Tickets are available at the FVSU Foundation Office and the athletics department.
