The Wildcats of Fort Valley State University (FVSU) could not duplicate last week's second half comeback against Delta State University when they met the Blazers of Valdosta State University  (VSU) on Saturday night (Sept. 8th) in Valdosta, GA.  In a blistering 62-14 loss, the Wildcats suffered their first defeat of the season.

Although the Wildcats strolled into Bazemore-Hyder Stadium with high expectations, that was simply not enough to overcome the 20th ranked Blazers.

FVSU struck first on their third possession of the game. Antonio Henton's 80-yard bomb to wide receiver Chris Slaughter gave the Wildcats an early lead of 7-0. The pass capped a three-play, 85-yard drive.

It did not take VSU long to answer. With 5:06 left in the first quarter VSU's Graham Craig completed a 77-yard pass to Seantavious Jones for a touchdown. After tying the score, the Blazer surged ahead on three consecutive touchdowns. Craig tossed a 36-yard touchdown pass to Gerald Ford which extended the Blazer lead to 13-7.  With 2:50 left in the first quarter, the Craig to Ford combination struck again; this time for a 12-yard touchdown. The Blazers built a 27-7 lead after Craig used his legs for a 5-yard touchdown run.

The Wildcats turned to its defense to cut the Blazer lead.  A Jabioas Glenn interception with 9:55 remaining in the first half was returned for a touchdown to make it a 27-14 score.  It was Glenn's second interception of the season. After that it was all VSU.  The Blazers used the remainder of the game to score five unanswered touchdowns to torch the Wildcats by a 62-14 final score.

The Wildcats finished the game with 381 yards of total offense. Henton was held to 14 completions on 39 attempts for 210 yards. Running backs Travis Richmond and Seth Hill combined for only 45 yards rushing. For the second consecutive week newcomer Leron Furr led the defense with nine total tackles.

The Wildcats will play their first home game of the season when they host the Panthers of Clark Atlanta University next Saturday (Sept. 15th) at 6 p.m. in Wildcat Stadium.  In addition to the game being the first conference contest for the Wildcats, the game has been designated as Military Appreciation Day.  All current military personnel and veterans are invited to attend the game at a discounted price of $5.00. Tickets are available at the FVSU Cashier's Office or online at www.wildcatticketoffice.com.
