FORT VALLEY STATE BEATS BENEDICT IN AUGUSTA CITY / CAPITOL CITY BANK CLASSIC

AUGUSTA, GA (September 28, 2013) – Fort Valley State University Wildcats captured the Augusta City / Capitol City Bank Classic crown and senior defensive back Ja'Bioas Glenn was named Defensive Player of the game on Saturday. The Wildcats stay undefeated in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) play, as their defense help put up most points ever this season. The Wildcats defeated conference foe Benedict College Tigers 35-30 on Saturday, September 28, 2013 in the Augusta City / Capitol City Bank Classic before an estimated crowd of 7,729.

Fort Valley State University improves their overall record to 2-2 and 2-0 in conference play and Benedict College drops to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in SIAC play.

After four and out for the Wildcats, Wildcats defense forced the Tigers into a three and punt on the second drive of the game. Wildcats senior defensive back Ja'Bioas Glenn (Vienna, GA) blocked Benedict's Curry Brian's punt and sophomore linebacker Stefon Harper (Griffin, GA) recovered for no gain in the Benedict end zone with 11:43 on the clock, freshman kicker Chris Ward (Macon, GA) kick was blocked to complete a 3 play 2-yard drive (6-0). Then, with 1:21 left in the first quarter, senior quarterback Eugene Smith (Pensacola, FL) connected on a 9-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Jamie Walker (Marshville, GA) for a second score, Ward kick attempt good (13-0).

On the very next play, Ward kickoff went to Benedict 10-yard line and Rodney Hall quickly returned the ball 90-yards for a touchdown to get the Tigers on the scoreboard at the 1:08 mark, Eduard Hernadez kick attempt good (13-7).

In the second quarter with 12:49 to go Benedict's Marcus Gilmore 5-yard touchdown pass to T. Gillie would give the Tigers the lead 14-13 capping off a 3 play 5-yard drive, Hernadez kick attempt good.

Glenn's block of a Tiger punt with .59 seconds left in the quarter would send FVSU to the lock room with the lead, as senior defensive back Calvin Jackson (Macon, GA) recovered the ball in Benedict's end zone. Smith pass was complete to junior wide receiver Kyle Taylor (College Park, GA) for the two point conversion (21-17).

On the first play of the third quarter, Martin Epps pass was intercepted by Glenn at Benedict's 34-yard line and returned for the touchdown to increase FVSU lead to 28-17, Ward kick attempt good.
Junior running back Jonquez Sanders (Butler, GA) 4-yard touchdown run would be FVSU's winning touchdown with 6:18 remaining in the third quarter, Ward kick attempt good (35-17).

Benedict push to fight back came in the fourth quarter with Harlon Samuels and Maurice Griffin score on a 29 and 62 yard pass from Graham, Hernadez kick attempts was good (35-30).

By the numbers, FVSU defense held Benedict to -16-yards rushing, but allowed 318-yards in passing. FVSU rushed for 111-yards and passed for 200-yards, while compiling 311-yards to Benedict 302-yards of total offense. The Wildcats biggest turn around came in penalties as they finished with 6 for 69-yards, down from 131.7-yards per game average.

Junior running back Nikilous McDaniels (Warner Robins, GA) led the Wildcats in rushing with 46-yards,Smith completed 12-22 passes for 197-yards and had one interception and sophomore tight end Donte' Warren caught 5 passes for 87-yards.

Defensively for the Wildcats, senior linebacker LeRon Furr (Columbus, GA) came to play leading the team with 12 tackles, 1 (9) sack, 4 (15) tackle-for-losses, one forced fumble and 2 quarterback hurried. Junior linebacker Kelcey Lewis (Peach County, GA) followed with 5 tackles, 2 (17) sacks, 2 (17) tackles-for-losses, one pass break-up and one quarterback hurried, while Glenn had 4 tackles, 1 (2) tackle for losses, 1 (34) interception, one pass break-up, 2 pass blocks and one quarterback hurried.

The Wildcats will play their first game at home on Saturday, October 5 as the Tigers of Tuskegee University come to town in a 6 p.m. matchup.
