Box Score FORT VALLEY, GA (September 6, 2014) – The Fort Valley State University football team opened the 2014 season with a 56-13 loss to Delta State University in a non-conference match-up on Saturday at Wildcat Stadium.
The Wildcats (0-1) rushed for 111 yards on 34 carries, while being led by senior running back
Jamar Smith with 58 yards on 6 rushes.
Junior quarterback
Malcolm Eady led an eight-play, 35-yard drive that ended with Eady rushing for a 1-yard touchdown to give the Wildcats the lead 6-0 with 11:09 remaining in the first half. The Swainsboro native completed 21-of-39 passes, for 178-yards and rushed for 21 yards on 10 carries.
The Statesmen (1-0) got their first score in the first quarter when Casey Osborne caught a 5-yard pass from Tyler Sullivan for a 6-7 score. Sullivan connected on a 12-yard pass to Justin Leavy, before running for a 3-yard touchdown and a 21-6 lead in the first half.
In the second half, the Statesmen's Timothy Foy scored from 3-yard out and a 1-yard run to give DSU a 35-6 lead going to halftime.
DSU rushed for 162-yards on 30 carries and passed for another 258-yard on the afternoon. Sullivan completed 25-of-33 passes and three touchdowns.
The Statesmen scored three times in the third quarter, starting with a 10-yard pass to Osborne from Sullivan. Eddie McCadney had a 45-yard rush for a touchdown and Travis Champion completed a 49-yard pass to Osborne to complete DSU scoring and a 56-6 lead.
FVSU scored the only points in the fourth quarter off a 6-yard pass completion to
Bolden Davis from
Otis Brown for a final score of 13-56.
Defensively, junior defensive back
Dominique Burks led the Wildcats with 7 tackles, sophomore defensive back
Patric Edwards had 6.5 and senior linebacker
LeRon Furr posted 5.5 tackles.
Jon Knox led DSU with 5.5 tackles in the contest.
The Wildcats will be back in action next Saturday, as they travel to Savannah, Georgia to play the Tigers of Savannah State University at 6 p.m.
