MONTGOMERY, AL (December 29, 2016) – Fort Valley State (3-7) men's basketball team fell 75-68 to Division I foe Alabama State University (2-10) tonight at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
Junior forward
James Barnes (Columbus, GA) led all scorers with 10 points and six rebounds at halftime and Demetrius Houston and Reginald Gee had nine points for the Hornets.
Barnes two free throws with eight seconds left sent the Wildcats to half up 36-35.
First half, Barnes two layup gave the Wildcats an early 4-0 lead, ASU's Rodney Simeon 3-point basket closed the gap to 4-3. Hornets took a 5-4 lead on Tony Armstrong's free throws, before senior point guard
Jalen Crawford (Detroit, MI) three pointer tied the game at 13 with 12:32 left. Barnes free throws one again tied the game at 26, with senior forward Dernard Williams (Warner Robins, GA) layup giving FVSU a two-point (28-26) advantage. With 2:20 left, Reginald Giles two 3-pointers increased ASU's lead to 35-31, but junior point guard
J. R. Bryant (Macon, GA) tie the score at 35.
Second half, ASU went on a 17-5 run as Terrance Leflore increased the margin by nine (59-50). FVSU's junior guard
Jamaal Garror (Conyers, GA) cut the lead to four, Williams's layup made it 61-63. Bryant's three pointer gave the Wildcats a 66-65 lead with 3:51 left.
Barnes had a team-high 14-points for the Wildcats and eight rebounds, while hitting 5-of-11 shots from the field and making 4-of-5 foul shots. Williams and Garror showed with 10-points apiece and Bryant finished with nine, along with senior guard
Ray Mobley (Snellville, GA).
Tony Armstrong and Demetrius Houston led the Hornets in scoring with 16 and 15 points.
The Wildcats leave Montgomery on tomorrow heading to Frankfort, KY where they will play Kentucky State University on Saturday, December 31 at 3 pm.
