Jaylon McMillan scored a team-high 35-points to lead Fort Valley State to a 113-91 win over Shaw University Friday night in the Conference Challenge on Shaw's campus at Spaulding Gym.
FVSU (1-2) used a 71 percent shooting from the field in the second-half and seven 3-point field goals to pull away from the Shaw Bears (2-2).
The Wildcats went to halftime up 50-43, but followed that lead by maintaining a double-digit advantage throughout the second half and jumping out to a 31-point lead on a jumper by
Glenn Hollaway with 10:09 left to play.
McMillan led four Wildcats in double figures with a career-high 35-points. The point total surpassed his previous high of 23 at the University of West Florida. He made 12-of-17 baskets from the field, 9-of 12 three pointers and hit 2-of-2 free throws.
Tyler Edwards followed up with 18-points and a team-high five assists, while going 5-of-5 from the field, draining 7-of-10 foul shots and blocking two shots.
Walter Foster grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and scored 14-points off a 7-of-8 night from the field and two blocks.
Jamaal Garror added 11-points and four assists.
FVSU shot 63.1 percent from the floor while holding the Bears to 44.3 percent from the field. The Wildcats out rebounded Shaw 40-34 and scored 40-points to 32-points in the paint, made 32-points to 17-points off turnovers and hit 21-points to 10-points on second chance shots. The Wildcats got 31-points to 18 from their bench.
DaVaughn Kelsie led Shaw with 35-points and Bell-DeAng Stephens had six boards.
The Wildcats will play Winston-Salem State University in game one of the Conference Callenge on Saturday, November 18 at 6 pm in Spaulding Gym.
