AMERICUS, GA – The Wildcats of Fort Valley State came up short in their quest for a third win Tuesday night with a 65-52 loss to Georgia Southwestern University at the Storm Dome on Georgia Southwestern's campus.
The Wildcats fell below five hundred at 2-3 overall, while Georgia Southwestern improved to 2-0 on the season.
James Barnes led FVSU with a game-high 19-points and eight rebounds, while making 8-of-14 shots from the floor, draining 3-of-3 foul shots, two blocks and a steal.
Walter Foster chipped in eight boards of his own, while blocking two shots and dishing out two assists.
R. J. Sessions and Andre Statam led Georgia Southwestern with 12-points apiece and Hasaan Buggs grabbed seven rebounds.
Neither team would put up great numbers, as the Wildcats hit 20-of-61 (32.8 percent) shots, 4-of-26 (15.4 percent) from long range and made 8-of-11 (72.7 percent) free throws. The Wildcats outscored Georgia Southwestern in the paint 30-24, added eight points off turnovers and collected 15-points on second chance shots.
FVSU fell short on rebounding with 41 to 43 for Georgia Southwestern. For the game, the Wildcats had 12 turnovers which is the lowest of the season.
The Wildcats went to the locker room down four (27-31) and would not lead or tie the game. The closest the team would get was within one point twice in the first half. Barnes drained two free throws in the second half to cut the lead to two at the 19:32 mark. Georgia Southwestern took control from there and jumped out to as much as 15.
