Box Score FORT VALLEY, GA. – Sophomore
Tyler Edwards hit two free throws with 11 seconds on the clock and put the game out of reach as Fort Valley State defeated Albany State in a huge conference win 74-70 Saturday night at the HPE Complex.
The Wildcats improved to five hundred (11-11) overall and 9-4 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). The Golden Rams dropped to 10-13 overall and 4-8 in the SIAC.
James Barnes and
Jalen Crawford led the Wildcats in scoring with 15 points apiece and
Jamaal Garror added 12 points and seven rebounds. FVSU out rebounded ASU 49-36 and forced them into 14 turnovers.
Michael Green scored a game-high 34 points to lead the Golden Rams, while pulling down eight rebounds. ASU managed to get 41 points from their bench.
The Golden Rams led by as much as seven in the first ten minutes of the second half. Crawford notched game at 59-59 with 5:45 left in the game and went ahead 63-61 with 4:31 to go. Then, with 1:47 on the scoreboard clock Garror's free throw increased the Wildcats lead to seven (71-64). Michael Green's foul shots cut FVSU's lead to 74-67 and that's as close as ASU would get.
ASU led 35-32 at the half as both teams traded blows while tying the game twice and a third time at 14-14 with 9:42 left. The Rams later jumped out to a 10 point lead and Garror's 3-pointer would tie the game at 32-32 with a minute left in the half.
The Wildcats shot 34.2 percent from the floor during the half, 14.3 percent in three pointers and 61.5 percent at the foul line. ASU hit 44.8 percent of their shots, 14.3 percent from behind the three point line and 61.5 percent at the line.
For the game, FVSU scored 27-of-67 shots for 40.3 percent, made two 3-pointers for 11.1 percent and went 18-of-26 at the foul line for 69.2 percent.
ASU hit 41.3 percent (26-of-63) from the floor, 25 percent (5-of-20) from behind the arc and 68.4 percent (13-of-19) from the free throw line.
FVSU will host the Panthers of Clark Atlanta University on Thursday, February 9, at the HPE Complex. Game time is scheduled for 8 pm.
