Box Score FORT VALLEY, GA. – Home at last for the Wildcats of Fort Valley State after being on the road the past two weeks, but home field did not pay off for them as they fell to the Golden Bears of Miles College 29-10 in a non-conference contest on Saturday at Wildcat Stadium.
Fort Valley State dropped to 0-2 overall, while Miles improved to 1-2 on the season.
The Wildcats pushed across 325 total yards of offense while rushing for 105 and passing for another 220. FVSU turned the football over three times and picked up ten penalties for 95-yards. Miles walked away with 328 total offensive yards with 173 on the ground and 155 in the air. The Wildcats bright spot came in third-down conversions by making 7-of-14 attempts to the Golden Bears 1-of-10.
At the end of the first quarter both teams were knotted at 3-3 with the Wildcats scoring their three points off a
Juan Serna 25-yard field goal with 1:23 remaining.
The Golden Bears' Nick Christiansen's 41-yard field goal at the 12:04 mark in the first quarter pushed Miles ahead 3-0. Miles picked up three more scores in the second quarter on a Justin Hardy two yard touchdown, a safety and a 55-yard touchdown pass from Li'Jon Cordier to Hardy making the score 19-3 at halftime.
Third quarter, FVSU came out of the locker room on fire and drove the ball down to the Miles one yard line, but the quarterback fumbled the ball while trying to stretch the ball over the goal and Miles recovered the ball in the end zone. The Wildcats played hard in the third quarter while allowing only seven points for a 26-3 score.
Then, with .23 seconds left in the third quarter Miles forced a fumble at the Wildcats 30 and returned it for a touchdown (26-3).
FVSU crossed the goal line for the first time in the fourth quarter as
Chauncey Jackson took a two yard touchdown pass over from
Demontay Jones with 6:21 remaining in the game.
Juan Serna's PAT was good 10-26.
Miles increased the lead to 29-10 with 2:25 left in the game off a Christiansen 50-yard field goal.
Slade Jarman led the Wildcats in rushing with 39-yards while completing 7-of-13 passes for 136-yards and one interception.
Jamari Clark led with four catches for 78-yards,
Jeremy Glinton had three catches and Lorenzo Smothers grabbed two catches for 55-yards.
Defensively,
Aaron Dore led FVSU with 12 tackles (5 solos),
Cannon Thomas collected nine tackles, had one tackle-for-loss, recovered one fumble and had two pass breakups. Cameron Young chipped in with seven tackles.
