Eagles Fend off Hard-Charging Wildcats

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – Once the Wildcats motor was started, the match excitement took hold. After taking the opening two sets, Toccoa Falls College fended off a hard-charging Fort Valley State volleyball team to extra points before it recorded a 3-1 win Tuesday night.
 
The Eagles (13-6) looked like they were in control after winning 25-18 and 25-16 to open the match. The Wildcats (3-11), though, bounced back with a 25-20 victory in the third set with the final five points. FVSU held a 16-10 advantage in the fourth set only to see Toccoa Falls battle back three set points to outlast a 30-28 final total.
 
Nia Bell pounded nine of her team-high 14 kills in the third and fourth sets, while she hit .258 in 31 swings. The junior added 15 digs and a pair of blocks.
 
Nia Thomas lined eight of her nine kills in the final two sets to go with 12 digs and an ace. India King added seven kills with four in sets three and four and two blocks.
 
Rita Davis handed out 31 assists, dug six attacks and killed two points. Jaelyn Franklin chipped in four kills and six digs, while Ashley Simmons-Blair contributed 13 digs.
 
Erin Carey and Natalie Thompson paced the Eagles with 12 and 11 kills.
 
Following two visitors' points to open a 20-18 lead in set three, FVSU took advantage of a hitting error and Bell downed the tying point to make it 20 all. Ashaunti Brown, Franklin and Bell killed one point apiece with two more Toccoa Falls attack errors, including the final set point, to keep the home team's comeback hopes alive.
 
The Eagles ran off three points in a row to tie set four, 20-20. Toccoa Falls had match point, 24-21, before FVSU's Bell killed a point and Thomas two as part of four-straight points for a 25-24 home lead. The Wildcats had two more set points, but could not capitalize, before the Eagles found the right combination to end the long set, 30-28.
 
FVSU continues at home in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Friday night match against Benedict College. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
