Bell Powers FVSU Past Benedict in Five Sets

COLUMBIA, S.C. – After coming up a few points short in the fifth set last night, the Wildcats finished the task on Thursday night. Nia Bell pounded a career-high 28 kills and powered Fort Valley State in a come-from-behind 3-2 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball win at Benedict College.

Bell hit back-to-back winners to pull FVSU (4-14/3-8 SIAC) ahead 21-19 in the opening set for the eventual 25-22 win. Benedict (12-13/5-7 SIAC) put together long runs in both the sets two and three, 25-15 and 25-18, to lead 2-1. The Wildcats capitalized on their third set point to outlast the Tigers, 27-25, to force a match-deciding set. FVSU netted the first four points and never trailed on its way to a 15-8 final capped by Bell's final kill for the last point of the night.

While hitting her career-best 28 kills, Bell did it at a strong .350 attack rate (7 errors, 60 total attacks). The junior added 22 digs and a block to her line.

Rita Davis handed out 39 assists and made it a double-double of her own with 10 digs. Nia Thomas chipped in 18 digs, nine kills and an ace. Ashley Simmons-Blair dug 20 digs, while India King had six kills and five total blocks.

Benedict College was led by Adrionna Washington's 15 kills.

FVSU completes it home schedule with a makeup 1 p.m. match against Paine College on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 27.
