Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Chris Myers

Hurricanes First-Half Storm Enough to Get Past Wildcats

AMERICUS, Ga. – The Wildcats solid start and winning second half could not make up for a scoreless run. Georgia Southwestern ran off 14-straight points over a 4:44 stretch and held off the Fort Valley State men's basketball team, 66-59, down the stretch.

A K'Viontae Williams trey pulled the Wildcats (0-4) to within three, 16-13, with 12:35 in the first half. The Hurricanes (1-2) took advantage of six visitors missed shots and three turnovers and netted 14 unanswered for a 30-14 advantage. FVSU ran off 12 points with 8:30 remaining to get back in the game, 57-49, and shaved one more off the difference late, but it made it no closer.

Williams hit 7 of 15 from the floor and 3 of his 4 long-range attempts for 21 points to go with five rebounds and four assists for top Wildcat honors. Forward Shawn Foxbrennen posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards.

D'Angelo Strickland made a pair of layups and had an assist in FVSU's 12-0 second-stanza run as part of his nine-point night. Jaylon McMillan added seven points and grabbed six rebounds.

For Georgia Southwestern, Jalen Morgan connected on 9 of 12 shots for 21 points and had 11 rebounds.

Leading 46-29 at half, the Hurricanes enjoyed their largest lead of 20 points four times in the first 7:37 of the second 20 minutes.

FVSU charged back into the contest behind two field goals by both Williams and Strickland to make it 57-49 at 8:30 left. The Wildcats ran off eight-straight points in the final minutes, but they ran out of time to complete the comeback.

Fort Valley State heads up to Atlanta for the weekend to take part in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference/Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Challenge held at Morehouse College. The Wildcats open with a 7:30 p.m. matchup against the Bears of Shaw University on Friday, Nov. 16.
