Shaw Powers Past FVSU Men’s Hoops

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Wildcats counter punches were not frequent enough Friday night. Behind Amir Hinton's 31-point performance, Shaw University powered past Fort Valley State men's basketball, 85-62, in the opening night of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association/Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Challenge.

Jaylin McMillan's 3-pointer went through the hoop and made the Wildcats (0-5) trail by only a single point, 13-12, 5:46 into the night. A late first-half Shaw (3-0) 12-0 spurt with 5:12 left gave it a cushion, 33-16, it would not give up. FVSU was able to pull back to within 15 points, 53-38, on a Dexter Williams layin seven minutes into the second 20 minutes, but could get no closer.

McMillan led the FVSU charge with 13 points and three assists. K'Viontae Williams was right behind with 11 points on 4 of 5 shooting.

D'Angelo Strickland missed his first double-double by one point as he finished with nine points and 10 caroms. Shawn Foxbrennen added eight points and Dexter Williams seven. Thomas Hardy chipped in a trio of buckets for six.

Hinton downed 10 of 21 of his field goal attempts for 31 points and swiped eight balls in his big performance for the Bears.

FVSU has a quick turnaround as it will be back on the Morehouse floor against Winston-Salem State at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
