Rams Prevail Over Wildcats in Final Minutes

ATLANTA, Ga. – The new Wildcats continue to make progress. For the second time in three games, Fort Valley State saw its opponent prevail in the final moments as Winston-Salem State took away the 64-55 win the second day of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association/Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Challenge.

After Jaylin McMillan's offensive putback tied the game at 46 for FVSU (0-6) with 10:08 remaining, Winston-Salem State (1-2) downed a 3-pointer over a minute later for the next bucket and never lost the lead in the final 8:32. A K'Viontae Williams jumper at 8:04 pulled the Wildcats back to within a point, 49-48, but the Rams netted the next seven points for the needed separation.

McMillan and Shawn Foxbrennen paced the FVSU charge with 14 points apiece. McMillan hit four 3-pointers and grabbed five rebounds, while Foxbrennen hit 7 of 13 field goal attempts and had four boards.

Thomas Hardy posted his best game of the season with 11 points on 5 of 6 shooting and a pair of steals. Williams, who had three assists, and D'Angelo Strickland both finished with five points and three rebounds.

William Crandell of Winston-Salem State led all players with 20 points on 9 of 15 attempts and pulled in 10 rebounds.

FVSU led early at 5-2 after a McMillan triple. Trailing 12-11 four minutes later, McMillan added another trey, Williams one free throw and Foxbrennen a layup for the Wildcats largest lead of 17-12 with 11:22 in the opening half.

Hardy swiped a ball and raced down to lay the ball in for a 25-24 FVSU lead (6:32). Strickland drained a 3-pointer and a jump shot on back-to-back Wildcats baskets for a 30-28 advantage with 3:49, before the Rams scored the final four points and a 32-30 intermission tally.

The Wildcats edged ahead three times in the second half – a Brenton Cliette-Jordan dunk (36-35 at 16:45), a McMillan 3-pointer (39-37 at 14:07) and a Foxbrennen offensive putback (41-40 at 13:06).

FVSU has Sunday off before it plays its final time before Thanksgiving with a Monday night, Nov. 19, game at Columbus State. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
