Wildcats Shoot Well, but Fall on Road to Cougars

COLUMBUS, Ga. – A nice early Wildcat lead slipped away on Monday night. After leading by nine points in the first nine minutes of play, Fort Valley State saw its miscues prove costly as Columbus State took advantage for the 82-63 men's basketball victory.

Trailing 9-8, the Wildcats (0-7) ran off the next 10 points behind a pair of Jaylon McMillan treys to take an 18-9 lead at 11:12 in the first half. The Cougars (3-1) answered with a 14-4 spurt over the next five minutes and 26-8 total to end the first 20 minutes to lead 35-26. Columbus State did not allow FVSU any closer than seven points, 52-45, with 12 minutes left the rest of the way.

McMillan pumped in a game-high 24 points with three triples, grabbed seven rebounds and handed out a pair of assists for the Wildcats. Brenton Cliette Jordan recorded a solid inside effort with a double-double of 14 points on 5 of 7 attempts and 16 boards, 13 defensive.

K'Viontae Williams added nine points on 3 of 3 shooting off the bench. D'Angelo Strickland chipped in eight points, six rebounds and three assists.

In one for the stat lines, FVSU made 23 of 46 shots as a team for 50.0-percent, but it committed 24 costly turnovers resulting in 32 Columbus State points.

Both Jalen Thomas and Chris Horton totaled 16 points apiece in the winning Cougars effort.
