FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats charged hard in the second half, but they could not sustain it. Fort Valley State pulled to within striking distance midway through the second half, but Kentucky State proved too much, 81-54, in Saturday's Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener.

Trailing by 22 points early in the opening moments of the second half, the Wildcats (0-8/0-1 SIAC) charged back into the contest. Jaylon McMillan dumped in two-straight baskets and Brenton Cliette-Jordan dunked one home as part of a 10-3 home spurt to pull within 10, 58-48, at 12:22. FVSU cut it back to 10 two more times for a 62-52 tally at 9:19, but Kentucky State (3-2/1-0 SIAC) rattled off a 19-2 run from there to end the game.

K'Viontae Williams guided the FVSU effort with 19 points on 8 of 13 attempts, including 13 of those points in the second half. McMillan added nine points, while both Cliette-Jordan and Thomas Hardy chipped in eight points apiece.

Dexter Williams added six points, four boards and two blocked shots off the Wildcats bench.

After 14 first-half points, Kevin Hays powered the Thorobreds with 20 total points, including four 3-pointers. Austin Sherrell had an 11-point and 12-rebound double-double.

FVSU moves on to host Central State for a Monday night, Nov. 26, contest. Tip is scheduled for 8 p.m.
