FVSU Finishes Strong, Gives Sherrill First Coaching Victory

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – Head coach Mark Sherrill can smile big tonight. For the first time this season, Sherrill's Fort Valley State men's basketball team finished strong and pulled out a 68-65 victory over visiting Central State in an excited HPE Complex crowd.

The Marauders (1-5/0-2 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) battled back to tie the game, 65-65, with 13.3 seconds left on the second-half clock. The Wildcats' (1-8/1-1 SIAC) K'Viontae Williams drove through traffic down the right side of the lane and saw his layup bank home, before he completed the conventional 3-point play, 68-65, at 3.3 seconds. Central State tried a last ditch 3-pointer that was no close and the FVSU celebration began.

Sherrill enjoys his first collegiate head coaching win of his career in his ninth contest. He can thank senior Jaylon McMillan, who recorded his best game of the season of 25 points on 8 of 15 shooting, including three treys and 6 of 6 from the charity stripe. The fourth-year Wildcat also posted five rebounds and six assists.

Shawn Foxbrennen was one of three other FVSU double-digit players with 12 points to go with eight boards. Williams and Brenton Cliette-Jordan chipped in 10 points apiece. Williams added eight rebounds and four assist, while Cliette Jordan provided a key late-game dunk and clutched eight rebounds.

The Wildcats downed 25 of 50 attempts and swiped nine steals.

Dwight Richards, Jr. led Central State with 20 points and seven rebounds.

Trailing 32-31 with 28 seconds in the first half, FVSU finished with a flurry on a fast break Williams layup and foul shot, before Foxbrennen stole the next Central State possession and flushed a dunk to end the half with a 36-32 halftime lead.

Neither squad led by more than two possessions the entire second half. A Cliette Jordan dunk from Thomas Hardy's pass at 11:16 gave the Wildcats a five-point spread at 48-43. Central State rallied right back with an 8-2 spurt for a 51-50 edge less than three minutes later.

The Marauders pushed back in front, 58-56, with 4:11 on the second-half clock. Exactly a minute later, McMillan buried his biggest trey of the season and first of two in the final three minutes to give the Wildcats a lead, 59-58. Another Cliette Jordan dunk gave FVSU a five-point separation, 65-60, only to see Central State hit a 3-pointer and an inside layup in a matter of 21 seconds to tie the contest at 65.

FVSU will be able to enjoy its first victory for a week. The Wildcats have off until they host the Hurricanes of Georgia Southwestern next Monday night, Dec. 3, in a 7:30 p.m. contest.
