Wildcats 20-Point Trio Leads Final Minutes Game-Deciding Winning Run

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats had their own weather warning in the final five minutes Monday night. Fort Valley State scored 23 of the game's final 28 points on the night behind a trio of 20-point producers and stormed past Georgia Southwestern, 80-65, in men's basketball action.

Trailing 60-57 with 5:20 left, Jaylon McMillan sank a deep shot-clock beating trey and started a game-deciding 14-0 Wildcats (2-8) run. K'Viontae Williams downed a long triple of his own for an eight-point difference three minutes later and McMillan downed another 3-pointer to cap the big run for a 71-60 margin at 1:46. In fact, FVSU held Georgia Southwestern (1-5) to only desperation 3-pointer with eight seconds left as the lone visitors' field goal of the final five minutes.

K'Viontae Williams and McMillan, who had 23 and 22 points, were joined by forward Shawn Foxbrennen's 21 points and 10 rebounds as the FVSU trio of 20-point scorers to lead the winning charge. K'Viontae made 8 of 12 from the floor with a pair of triples to go with five rebounds, five assists and two steals.

For the second game in a row, McMillan eclipsed the 20-point plateau with 22. The senior made 6 of 11 on the night, including 4 of 5 from long-range and all six of his free throws. Foxbrennen added a 6 of 9 evening and two treys of his own to go with his 10 defensive boards.

The FVSU victory gives it a split against Ga. Southwestern after it fell 68-59 on the road back on Nov. 14. The Wildcats sank an impressive 22 of 24 from the foul line with the two misses coming in the final minute with a double-digit lead.

D'Angelo Strickland came off the Wildcat bench and contributed six points and seven rebounds, including a late steal and breakaway dunk. Thomas Hardy finished with four points and four assists while Dexter Williams blocked three shots to go with five caroms and a bucket.

Andrea Statam had top Ga. Southwestern honors with 17 points and nine rebounds.

In the first half, neither team led by more than four points until FVSU scored the final five points on a K'Viontae Williams 3-pointer and Strickland dunk for a 36-29 halftime advantage.

The Hurricanes tied the contest in the opening four second-stanza minutes at 40. The game went on to have seven lead changes until the McMillan 3-pointer tied the game at 60-60 and started the huge home run to the finish.

FVSU has two days off until it heads to Tallahassee, Florida for a Thursday night, Dec. 6, exhibition contest at Florida A&M. Tip is set for 7 p.m
