SIAC Full Release
ATLANTA, Ga. – After completing the 2018 campaign, the Wildcats have three honored gridiron standouts. Strong Safety Cameron Young earned Fort Valley State's highest All-Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference acclaim on the First Team, while kick returner/slot back Lorenzo Smothers and offensive lineman Darrius Hicks grabbed Second Team status.

The top SIAC awards went to Tuskegee's Ahmad Deramus as the Overall Player of the Year. Santo Dunn of Morehouse was the Offensive Player of the Year and Austin Stephens from Miles College is the Defensive Player of the Year. Tuskegee also had the Freshman of the Year in D.J. Horne, while Kevin Greenhow out of Central State is the Newcomer of the Year. Coach Rich Freeman from Morehouse was voted the Coach of the Year.

Making his second appearance on the First Team in as many years, Young anchored the Wildcats defense in his third year. The junior from Eastman, Ga., led FVSU and ranked fourth in the SIAC in tackles at 8.5 per game. Young totaled 85 stops in 10 games, including 54 solo tackles. He added 2.5 tackles for loss of six yards, forced a fumble, recovered a fumble, broke up two passes and blocked a kick. The strong safety had his top tackle day with 20 tackles, 14 solo, against regionally-ranked Lenoir Rhyne and added 14 tackles versus Tuskegee. Young had seven of FVSU's 10 games with at least seven tackles.

Smothers returns to the All-SIAC teams as a punt returner on the Second Team. The sophomore from Buena Vista, Ga., returned nine punts for 42 yards, but it was his kick returns that stood out more. Smothers ran back 18 kick-offs for 451 yards, including the game-winning 96 yarder at Morehouse with three minutes left in the game of the 27-22 upset. The slot back ranked second in the Conference in both receptions per game (4.7/gm.) and receiving yards per game (78.3 yds/gm.), while he stood third in all-purpose yards per game (135.8 yds/gm.). On the year, Smothers added 33 rushes for 125 yards and caught 43 passes for 727 yards. He finished with three 100-yard receiving games with a season-best 140 yards on only three catches against Lenoir-Rhyne. He totaled six touchdowns between one rushing, four receiving and the one kick-off.

Hicks, a junior lineman from Camilla, Ga., was the top FVSU lineman for the second year in a row and made the Second Team.  The 2017 All-SIAC First Teamer helped the Wildcats average 249.5 yards per game on offense in 10 games.
