Wildcats Post Highest Scoring Night, but No. 6 Blazers Run to Victory

VALDOSTA, Ga. – In a fun game to watch, the Wildcats hung tough with one of the nation's highest-ranked NCAA Division II men's basketball teams. Fort Valley State had early success and led, before No. 6 Valdosta State upped the pace and downed 19 treys for the 111-98 win.
 
For the first 10 minutes, the Wildcats (2-10) showed its season progress and led by as many as six points, 24-18. The visitors continued to lead, 26-25, until Valdosta State (9-0) went on a 20-4 run to race out to a 45-30 advantage. FVSU started the second half the same as the first and two Shawn Foxbrennen buckets pulled it to within five, 55-50, and six points, 60-54, in the first four minutes. Leading only 72-65 at the 12:12 mark, The Blazers opened the margin with a second big run, 19-5, over a four-minute stretch for their cushion.
 
In the biggest Wildcat point outburst of the season and second-highest in the last two seasons, Foxbrennen dropped in 32 points on 12 of 15 from the floor, 4 for 4 from long-range and made all four of his foul shots. He also added nine rebounds, three assists, two steals and a blocked shot.
 
Jaylon McMillan hit the 20-point mark for the third game in a row with 26 points on 9 of 14 from the field and 6 of 8 treys, while he pulled down four rebounds and handed out five assists.
 
Another Wildcat season-best, D'Angelo Strickland continued coming on in the recent games with 18 points also on 9 of 14 tries to go with six boards and five helpers.
 
Thomas Hardy made it four FVSU double digit scorers with 11 points, while K'Viontae Williams chipped in nine tallies, 11 rebounds, five steals and two assists.
 
The two foes combined to make 82 of the 148 field goal attempted with the Wildcats making 58-percent (40 of 69). The Blazers held the 3-pointer advantage by sheer numbers with 19 made in 45 tries, while the Wildcats downed 10 of 15. FVSU also won the board battle, 37-31.
 
FVSU showed good improvement from the two team's meeting on the opening Saturday, Nov. 10, where Valdosta State recorded a 94-65 win in Albany, Ga.
 
Beau Justice accounted for 12 of the home team's 19 treys in 22 tries for a gaudy 47-point night.
 
FVSU returns home for finals the rest of the week until going to Tuskegee for a 4:30 p.m. EST Saturday afternoon, Dec. 15, contest.
