Miles Uses Treys to Evaporate FVSU Lead and Edges Out Victory

FAIRFIELD, Ala. – The Wildcats enjoyed its second-largest lead of the year in the second half. Miles College used six of its nine second-half 3-pointers to evaporate a 15-point Fort Valley State lead and edge out a 68-64 men's hoops victory Monday night.
 
Following a six-point halftime lead, FVSU (2-12/1-3 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) doubled up Miles, 18-9, in the first 6:29 of the second 20 minutes for a 45-30 lead, including the final eight points in that stretch. Out of the 13:32 media timeout, the Tigers (6-3/4-0 SIAC) drained six triples over the next six minutes as part of a 24-3 spurt and 54-48 lead.
 
Jaylon McMillan dropped his fifth trey through the twin with six seconds left to pull the Wildcats to within 66-64. Miles' Jelani Watson-Gayle added to his game-high point total of 25 with the game-clinching two free throws with three second for the 68-64 final.
 
McMillan finished with FVSU high-scoring honors with 19 points on 7 of 12 from the field and 5 of 8 from long-range to go with three assists.
 
Shawn Foxbrennen had another quality outing with 16 points on 5 of 9 attempts, including all three treys tried, and grabbed nine rebounds. D'Angelo Strickland chipped in 14 points, six boards and two blocked shots. K'Viontae Williams added 10 points and six assists.
 
Watson-Gayle and DeVonte Fuller both surpassed the 20-point mark with 25 and 21 tallies for the Tigers.
 
Trailing 18-12 with 6:51 to play in the first 20 minutes, McMillan started a 10-0 FVSU run. The senior hit a triple followed by two Strickland buckets and a Williams 3-pointer to go ahead, 22-18. McMillan fired home his third first-half 3-pointer at the buzzer for a visitors 27-21 intermission advantage.
 
The Wildcats extended their lead in the early second half as their first five field goals were of the 3-point variety before a Strickland inside jump shot made it 45-30 at 13:47 remaining.
 
FVSU stays in the state of Alabama as it will take part in the Tuesday night, Dec. 18, Rocket City Classic in Huntsville. FVSU will battles Alabama-Huntsville at 6:30 p.m. before Alabama takes on Liberty University after its game.
