Chargers Overtake Wildcats in Rocket City Classic

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – As part of the Rocket City Classic, Alabama-Huntsville went out to an early lead and did not allow Fort Valley State fully into the men's basketball game in the 83-59 final.

After a Shawn Foxbrennen triple tied the game in the opening minute for the Wildcats (2-13), the Chargers (8-3) scored the next 11 points and 20 of the following 27 to open a 23-7 advantage nine minutes into the night. A Tarrence Edwards trey pulled FVSU to within eight points, 31-23, with 4:09 in the first half, but it could get no closer.

Foxbrennen recorded the big night for the Wildcats with 19 points as the lone double-digit scorer, while he had six rebounds.

Evans chipped in eight points with a 3-pointer and six rebounds, while D'Angelo Strickland added eight points of his own on 4 of 6 from the floor. Dexter Williams contributed five points and three boards and Aaron Edwards dished out a season-high five assists.

Tanner Finley downed 6 of 10 triples for 21 points to lead Alabama-Huntsville.

In the early second half, Strickland connected on a jump shot off a K'Viontae Williams pass to give the Wildcats life at 42-33 with 17:37 on the clock. The Chargers, though, hit back-to-back 3-pointers and added a layup to stop any Wildcat momentum.

Alabama-Huntsville connected on 16 of 36 tries from 3-point range, while FVSU was only 4 for 19.

FVSU heads to the mandated NCAA Division II Christmas week off. The Wildcats return on New Year's Eve, Dec. 31, at home against the Magicians of LeMoyne-Owen. Tip time set for 3 p.m.
