Lemoyne-Owen Pulls Away from FVSU in Second Half

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The home fortunes of Monday afternoon's contest changed quickly. After Fort Valley State pulled to within four points in the opening second-half minute, Lemoyne-Owen pushed the margin to double figures in the next 60 seconds on its way to a 73-59 men's basketball victory.
 
Thomas Hardy's inside layup cut the Wildcats (2-14/1-4 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) deficit to four points, 35-31, with 18:47 remaining. The Magicians (9-5/4-2 SIAC) pushed the difference to 10 points with the next six tallies and slowly expanded the margin to 17 points, 57-40, right at 10 minutes left.
 
Shawn Foxbrennen had the lone solid FVSU shooting day for his team of 7 for 13 from the field and 3 of 5 from long-range for 19 points to go with seven rebounds and two blocks. Jaylon McMillan added 12 points and eight rebounds. Hardy and D'Angelo Strickland had six points apiece.
 
Lemoyne-Owen put four player in double figures led by Tyrone Banks, who also had eight assists, 18-point day.
 
The Wildcats did enjoy a good start to the contest. McMillan had a foul shot and inside jumper (3-0). Foxbrennen, Strickland and McMillan added one bucket each as FVSU lead 5-2, 7-3 and 9-5 in the first 3:29. Lemoyne-Owen, though, netted the next nine points to make it 14-9 and did not trail again over the final 34:03.
 
FVSU begins 2019 with another SIAC crossover home game when Lane College comes to the HPE Arena for an 8 p.m. Wednesday night, Jan. 2, contest.
