Wildcats First-Half Lead Ends as Eagles Push Past for Win

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – It was the Jaylon McMillan first-half show as the Wildcats led almost the entire first 17:25 of the men's basketball game. Carson-Newman used the final eight points of the opening period and first eight points of the second half to push past Fort Valley State, 95-67, Saturday afternoon.

Behind a turnaround jumper and two free throws by Brenton Cliette Jordan, the Wildcats (2-9) held seven points leads twice, 31-24 and 36-29, in the opening 14 minutes of action. FVSU was able to maintain the advantage for the majority of the opening 17-plus minutes as McMillan buried six treys and 22 points, including the team's final seven first-half points. The Eagles (6-3), though, ran off eight points in the final 1:40 of the first 20 minutes and eight more in 2:03 to continue their run for a 55-43 lead, which they did not give up the rest of the way.

McMillan added five second-half tallies to his line for a game-best 27 points on 10 of 19 shooting day.

K'Viontae Williams drained all three of his treys as part of 12 points to go with seven rebounds and five assists. D'Angelo Strickland contributed 10 points and five boards inside. Cliette Jordan had eight points and nine rebounds off the bench.

Carson-Newman saw five players score in double figures, including Grant Teichmann (22 points with six 3-pointers) and Parker Role' (21 points).

FVSU was able to get back to within eight points, 59-51, on a Williams 3-pointer at 15:12 remaining only to see Carson-Newman net the following eight points.

FVSU will have next week off for finals until it travels to Tuskegee for a 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, contest.+
