Jamaal Garror scored 18-points to lead Fort Valley State University (FVSU) (12-15; 9-10) in their final regular season game as they fell 70-66 to No. 11 Morehouse College (MHC) (23-1; 17-1) Monday night at Forbes Arena.
Garror drained 7-of-12 field goals, 4-of-5 three-pointers, one rebound, two assists, two blocks and one steal in 32 minutes of play.
Tyler Edwards and
Jaylon McMillan each added 13-points while Edwards posted a team-high six rebounds.
MHC forced the Wildcats into 16 turnovers while outscoring FVSU 16-10 off turnovers, 24-14 on points in the paint, both teams got 15-points from their benches while FVSU won out 11-5 on second-chance shots.
The Wildcats managed to hit 23-of-59 (39%) shots from the floor, 9-of-24 (37.5%) baskets from behind the arc while making 11-of-23 (47.8%) free throws. FVSU's largest lead of 10-points came in the first quarter with 8:23 remaining to halftime. MHC's 11-point margin came with 14:51 left in the game.
FVSU went to intermission down by 2 (30-32) and scored 36-points in the second period to MHC's 38. The Wildcats outrebounded MHC 40-38.
Tyrius Walker led all scorers with 27-points and Omar Alston grabbed 10-rebounds for the Tigers.
MHC made 40.4% (21-of-52) shots from the field, 25% (3-of-12) trays and hit 67.6% (25-of-37) foul shots.
Garror's 3-pointer gave the Wildcats a 1 (5-4) lead in the first half at the 18:21 mark but MHC re-gained the lead 17 seconds later 6-5. FVSU lead the first half through the 4:45 mark even going up by 10-points but the Tigers tied the game at 25 with 4:45 left to intermission. MHC pushed the lead to seven with 1:26 left but Garror's three-pointer cut the lead to 30-32 with 27 seconds remaining to halftime.
At the 14:51 mark in the second half, MHC took an 11-point advantage twice. With 9:55 to go Garror's layup cut the lead to 4 (48-52) and
Trey Elliott's 3-pointer made it 3 (53-56) with 8:03 to play. McMillan's three-pointer and Edwards' two free throws drew the Wildcats to within 3-points with 3:42 and 1:58 left. McMillan hit a 3-pointer for FVSU's final points 66-69 with 10 seconds left.
The Wildcats will travel to Birmingham, AL on Sunday, February 25 to play in the 2017-2018 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Basketball Tournament.
