Wildcats Fall Short in Final Moments Against Tigers

COLUMBIA, S.C. – After the Wildcats battled back into a third-quarter lead, the Tigers put the final two scores on the scoreboard in last 13 minutes. Benedict College started strong and held off a final Fort Valley State threat in the final moments to hold on for a 28-20 football victory in the Palmetto City Classic.

Following a Benedict (2-1/1-0 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) score to go in front 28-20, FVSU (1-3/1-1 SIAC) started with the ball at midfield on its own 49-yardline with just under four minutes left. Quarterback Garrel Quainton found Lorenzo Smothers for 34 yards on 4th-and-6 down to the home 13-yardline with a minute left. Three plays later on a second fourth down of the drive, Quainton's pressured pass fell incomplete in the back of the endzone ending the potential game-tying drive.

After the Tigers scored on their first two possessions of the game, the Wildcats defense stepped up. The FVSU defensive unit held the home team scoreless for 37 minutes in the middle of the game. In fact, the first two Wildcats scores were made by Glendrell Byrd's 17-yard fumble recovery after a Voris Brant sack forced the fumble with 4:15 left in the second quarter. Floyd forced the second fumble on a hit of the Tigers' Harris and linebacker David Brown came up with the ball late in the third quarter, which Quainton took in for the go-ahead touchdown less than three minutes later.

Floyd finished with three stops, the sack and forced fumble, while Bryant had two stops to go with his sack and forced fumble. Zach Anderson leaped in the air in the second quarter for his second interception of the year. Nicco Whigham, Andrew Robinson and Aaron Dore paced the FVSU defense with five tackles apiece.

In his first start this season, Quainton connected on 15 of 31 pass attempts for 148 yards without an interception. He also rushed for a team-high 60 yards on 12 carries, including a 3-yard touchdown run.

Smothers pulled in two passes for 32 yards and rushed for another 41 yards on 11 carries. Jeffery Mack had his best receiving game of the season with 60 yards on six catches.

Benedict held the slight edge on total yards on the night, 298-248, but FVSU won the turnover battle, 3-1.

Harris led the home team by completing 16 of 22 passes for 247 yards and two scores, while he rushed for a team-best 25 yards on 15 carries. He was sacked four times and lost two fumbles.

Benedict owned the first quarter with touchdowns on its first two times with the ball and held a 14-0 lead after 10:21 into the game.
The Byrd fumble recovery for the Wildcats touchdown made it 14-7 with 4:15 left in the first half.

Quainton's 3-yard score tied the game at 14 following the Floyd sack and Brown fumble recovery with 3:39 to go in the third frame.

A Camron Young scoop and run of 11 yards into the endzone for the go-ahead score on a botched Benedict (2-1/1-0 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) punt snap with 24 seconds left in the third quarter. The third FVSU (1-3/1-1 SIAC) defensive touchdown of the night gave the visitors their first lead of the night, 20-14, after three quarters.

The Tigers roared right back on the first fourth-frame and ensuing possession. Benedict covered 75 yards on only five plays before quarterback Dominique Harris completed a 30-yard scoring strike to Drelon Freeman for a 21-20 lead at 13:11 in the contest.

The Wildcats defense held the home team's offense when it threatened to the FVSU 29-yardline. On the punt, FVSU touched the ball and Benedict's Cederick Trottie recovered at the one-yardline. Harris plunged in on the next play from a yard out to extend the Tigers lead to 28-20 with 3:58 remaining.

AJ Shipman took the kick-off to the FVSU 49-yardline and the Wildcats were in business for the final drive with 3:48 left in the game. Garrel Quainton found Smothers on the deep left sideline for 34 yards down to the 13-yardline. After two incompletions with a sack between them, Quainton rushed pass fell incomplete in the back part of the Tigers endzone to end the Wildcats potential game-tying drive.
