Promising FVSU Volleyball Season Opens with Split Against CIU

FORT VALLEY, Ga. -- With a young-and-upcoming roster, the Wildcats opened the 2018 season in solid fashion. The promising Fort Valley State volleyball team began the year with a hard-fought split of back-to-back matches against Columbia International after it won the first match, 3-1, before it fell in tight 3-2 late contest.

The Wildcats (1-1) took control early against the Rams (4-7) with opening 25-18 and 25-22 set wins, before the visitors bounced back with a 25-23 third set final. FVSU completed the season-opening win when it outlasted Columbia International 26-24 in set four.

After opening with wins in the first two sets again (25-15 and 25-23), CIU edged a long third set by a 29-27 final. The Wildcats had their chances late in set four but could not put the set away and fell 28-26. In a close fifth set, the Rams held on for the 15-11 final to win the second match, 3-2.

The three FVSU frontline players of Nia Ball, India King and Nia Thomas led the home attack. Bell totaled 29 kills in 78 swings. Thomas and King add two more 20-plus king players. Thomas chipped in  20 kills and 16 digs, while King had 21 kills and four aces.

Directing the offense, setter Rita Davis handed out 64 total assists. Ashley Simmons-Blair had two double figure dig matches with 19 and 15.

CJ Hinton posted the top CIU night with 40 kills and 22 digs.

Fort Valley State returns to action Saturday while it plays Middle Georgia State and Fisk University in Macon, Ga.
