FVSU Uses Second-Half Early Surge to Overtake Paine

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats didn't finish the first 20 minutes strong, but they more than made up for it in the opening minutes of half number two. Fort Valley State used a 14-2 spurt in the first 4:34 and overtook Paine College, 64-50, in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball Saturday.

The visiting Lions (5-13/4-7 SIAC) erased a five-point Wildcats (5-17/4-7 SIAC) in the final three minutes to take a 27-25 lead to intermission. After trading opening second-half buckets, a K'Viontae Williams dunk started
a 10-0 FVSU run where Andrew Ziegler accounted for three baskets and six of the points. The Wildcats increased the difference to 14 points, 43-30, moments later and never let it fall under nine points.

Shawn Foxbrennen scored 14 of his team-high 20 points in the first half as he made 9 of 14 for the game and had a double-double with 10 rebounds.

Jaylon McMillan was the lone other Wildcat in double figures with 10 points. K'Viontae Williams added eight points, five rebounds and three assists. Brenton
Cliette Jordan, Ziegler and D'Angelo Strickland each chipped in six points.

FVSU was able to turn the tide for good off a second half of 61.3-percent shooting from the field (19 of 31). The Wildcats also held the Lions to only 15 of 50 from the floor (30.0%) for the contest.

Cameron Gaines finished with 21 points as the Lions top point producer.

FVSU next hosts Benedict College on Monday night, Jan. 26, in an 8 p.m.
tip.
