McMillan Pumps Career-High, Wildcats Hit Century Mark in Win over Badgers

MOBILE, Ala. – When Jaylon McMillan hits his career best, the Wildcats score over the century mark. Fort Valley State saw both events happen as it netted the first nine points, never trailed and registered its best performance of the year, 105-97, to defeat Spring Hill College Monday night.

McMillan downed a trey 24 seconds into the game and added a fastbreak layup two minutes later as FVSU (3-15/2-5 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference), not only put the first nine points on the scoreboard, but ran out to a 13-2 lead 3:14 into the night. The Wildcats senior continued to explode from the field as he pumped in six more 3-pointers of his 27-point half and the visitors held as much as a 21-point advantage before the 51-39 lead over the Badgers (5-10/1-5 SIAC).

Spring Hill regrouped and pulled with four points, 64-60, in the second half, but a K'Viontae Williams jumper and Shawn Foxbrennen triple stopped the run. The Badgers made one last push in the final minutes to 99-95 with 37 seconds, before the Wildcats scored six of the last eight to close the night.

McMillan finished the game with a career-best 40 points on 15 of 21 from the field and 9 of 11 from long-range. He also swiped four balls to go with two rebounds and two steals. The four-year guard broke the 1,000-point career plateau with the career-high and now has 1,008 points to his credit.

In his last career-high, McMillan hit for 35 points on Nov. 17, 2017 at Shaw, which was also the last time FVSU  surpassed 100 points in a 113-91 victory.

Thomas Hardy joined McMillan with his season-high of 19 points on 8 of 12 shooting, including a steal and breakaway slam with a free throw to boot to punctuate the win with 13 seconds left. He added five assists and three steals.

Foxbrennen chipped in 12 points, including a pair of second-half treys, and four boards. Brenton Cliette Jordan added 11 points, four caroms and three steals. Williams had eight points, six rebounds and three assists from the point.

Off the FVSU bench, Levi Griffin showed well with five points and three rebounds.

Spring Hill received a top night from forward Brandon Fischer with 29 points, including 15 of 15 from the foul line.

Leading 13-2 only 3:14 into the game, the Wildcats continued their solid early play. The visitors turned it into a 21-7 lead on an Andrew Ziegler lay in, before a Hardy 3-point play pushed it to 35-14 with 9:02 in the first half. McMillan added a trio of his 3-pointers in the final 7:02 to help FVSU to the 51-39 intermission tally.

After answering the early second-half home spurt, the Wildcats kept the lead in double figures until a 10-4 Badgers last try to make it 97-92 at 45 seconds. FVSU, though, answered with six of the final seven points in the last half minute.

FVSU heads home for the Saturday night, Jan. 12, clash against rival Albany State. Tip is set for 8 p.m. in the HPE Arena.
