Wildcats Seek to Tame Maroon Tigers on Homecoming

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – It's Homecoming Week in The Valley! The Fort Valley State football teams seeks to ride the wave of excitement on campus and tame the Morehouse College Maroon Tigers on Saturday afternoon in an always-tough Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference gridiron matchup.
 
The Wildcats (4-2/2-0 SIAC East) returns home for the first time in four weeks and final time of the season this weekend in the 2 p.m. contest at Wildcat Stadium versus the Maroon Tigers (2-4/0-2 SIAC East).

Last Meeting: Oct. 27, 2018 – FVSU win 27-22 at Morehouse
Game Summary: Demontay Jones rushed for one first-quarter score and passed for two second-quarter scores, including the second one from 27 yards to Jeffery Mack, for a 21-2 halftime lead. The Maroon Tigers came back with three second-half scores for a 22-21 lead with 3:32 left. Lorenzo Smothers raced back the ensuing kick-off of the third score 96 yards to put FVSU back on top for good 27-22.

 GENERAL NOTES
  • Both teams come in off road contests last weekend -- FVSU won 77-34 at Central State & Morehouse fell 21-10 against Tuskegee in Columbus, Ga.
  • FVSU has won the last 4 meetings and 6 of the last 7 years of meetings
  • FVSU won the last 3 games of the series played in Fort Valley with last loss at home being Oct. 29, 2011 in a 49-12 loss
  • FVSU head coach Kevin Porter is 3-0 vs. Morehouse
  • Both teams have lost to Miles College – FVSU at home (38-21) and MHC on the road (45-21)
 
Wildcats:
  • FVSU looks for first 5-game win streak in 7 seasons – won 5 in a row from Oct. 6 to Nov. 3 of 2012 with the 4th game of the run being a 26-19 win at Morehouse College
  • Currently on its first 4-game win streak since Oct. 7-28 of the 2017 season, including a 52-7 win over Morehouse as the 4th game of the run
  • Split first two home games of 2018 – loss to Miles (38-17) in season opener and win over Shorter (30-28) in week 3
  • Posted most points in over a decade with last week's 77-34 win at Central State
  • Averaged 47.5 points (190 points total) in the last 4 winning weeks against 25.5 points allowed (102 points give up total)
  • Started 2-0 in the SIAC East and aim for second 3-0 start in 3 years
  • Lost the 2018 Homecoming game to nationally-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne (30-22) in a late comeback by the visiting team
 
Maroon Tigers:
  • Comes off 7-3 season in 2018 – first winning season in since 2014 when were 6-4
  • Second road game in a row after losing 21-10 in Columbus, Ga., against Tuskegee
  • 3 of 6 games were decided by less than a touchdown and two others by 9 and 11 points
  • 1-1 in two true road games, 0-2 in neutral site contests and 1-3 overall away from Atlanta
 
 
WILDCATS OFFENSE VS MAROON TIGERS` DEFENSE

Wildcats Offense:
  • Average 37.8 points & 382.5 yards of total offense
  • Totaled season-high 592 yards on 85 plays (7.0 yds/play) last week, 2nd time of 500+ totals (532 yds vs. Benedict 3 weeks ago)
  • 1522 yards total offense in last 3 games or 507.3 average
  • Scored most points in over a decade of 77 points last week at Central State, 2nd time to have 50+ points (50 pts. Vs. Benedict)
  • Increased rushing production in each of last 3 weeks with totals of 109, 144 and 110 yards
  • QB Slade Jarman made it three SIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors in a row – he passed for 386 yards on 33 of 48 attempts with 4 TDs, while he rushed for another TD on 5 car. For 30 yds –
  • Jarman set his new best of 15 TD passes and needs 49 yards to surpass his 2017 season total –he sits at 1,629 yards and 15 TDs where in 2017 he finished at 1,678 yards and 14 TDs.
    Jarman ranks in top 16 in NCAA Division II in 8 different categories, including 5th in completions/game (23.67), 6th in both points responsible per game (21.0) and points responsible for (126).
  • 15 Wildcats have caught a pass and 7 have double-figure totals
  • Slot receiver Malik Route posted his best game of his first year as a Wildcat with 8 catches for 129 yards and TDs of 6 and 58 yards. He also pulled in another two 2-point conversion catches
  • Shemar Bridges, QA Walker and Joseph Ross hail as the top targets with a combined 75 receptions for 1,018 yards and 11 TDs.
 
Maroon Tigers Defense:
  • Average 27.0 points allowed & 323.8 yards of total offense per game
  • Gave up 30+ points two times, both losses, in games of less than 30 points allowed averaged 20.5 to opponents
  • Allowed 317 yards of offense (125 rush/192 pass) vs. Tuskegee last week
  • LB Jonathan Mathis has been everywhere and leads team by 30 tackles with 69 TT to go with 8.5 TFL; he added 11 TT and 2 TFL last week
  • DE Demetrice Lofto doubles Mathis for the team lead in TFLs of 15 to go with 8 sacks and 39 stops
 
WILDCATS DEFENSE VS. MAROON TIGERS OFFENSE
Wildcats Defense
  • Allowed 32.8 points per game & 419.2 yards of total offense
  • Gave up only 25.5 points in last 4 weeks of wins – compared to 47.5 points in first 2 weeks
  • Forced 2 fumbles and returned both for TDs, and registered 3 sacks, 7 TFLs and 5 pass breakups at Central State
  • Both LB Kentron James and Aaron Dore returned fumbles for 68-yd TDs
  • LB Majeste Hansberry recorded his 4th double-figure tackle game with 10 last week; leads team with 58 TT to go with 3 TFL
  • SS Zach Anderson paces the secondary with 40 TT
  • DE Demetrius Harris added a sack at Central State to take his season total to 7 and leads team with 10.5 TFL
  • DE Jahseari Patterson forced one of the fumbles to go with 5 TT and 2 TFL last week; has 7 TFL, 2 sacks and 5 QB hurries
 
Maroon Tigers Offense
  • Average 21.7 points per game & 337.2 yards of total offense per contest
  • Tied a season-low with 10 points last week vs. Tuskegee; lone TD came on a RB Frank Bailey 10-yd run
  • Produced 300 yards of total offense last Saturday (159 rush/141 pass)
  • Scored 26 and 33 points in 2 wins (29.5 point average)
  • QB Michael Sims threw for 141 yards on 18 of 30 with 2 INTs vs. Tuskegee; 81 of 132 for 806 yds and 4 TDs to 4 INTs (134.3 yd/gm)
  • RBs Santo Dunn & Frank Bailey combine to key offense – combined 127 rushes for 647 yards and 6 TDs (107.8 yds/gm); Dunn also a team-high 30 catches for 178 yds and a TD
  • WR Tremell Gooden is the top receiver with 29 grabs for 475 yards and 5 TDs (79.2 yds/gm)
